Our tri-State, DC, Maryland and Virginia, is filled with an abundance of talent and the teachers play a heavy role not just in teaching, mentoring but also bringing out the best in our children. This is an effort to get to know these amazing, skilled, and talented dancers!

The Sangeet Natak Akademi recognizes Bharaatnatyam, Kathak, Kuchipudi, Odishi, Kathakali, Sattriya, Manipuri and Mohiniyattam as classical dances in India. Whereas the Indian Government’s Ministry of Culture recognizes Chau also along with the eight.

Bharatanatyam

Bharatanatyam is a major form of Indian classical dance that originated in the state of Tamil Nadu. It is one of eight forms of dance recognized by the Sangeet Natak Academic year and it expresses South Indian religious themes and spiritual ideas, particularly of Shaivism, Vaishnavism and Shaktism.

Kathak

Kathak refers to one of the major classical dance form primarily found in northern India, with a historical influence similar to Bharatanatyam in south India, Odissi in east India and other major classical dances found in South Asia.

Kuchipudi

Kuchipudi, a pre-eminent Indian classical dance form counted among the leading classical dance forms of India, is a dance-drama performance art that originated in a village of Krishna district of Andhra Pradesh, India. Kuchipudi also evolved as a religious art rooting back to the age-old Hindu Sanskrit text ‘Natya Shastra’ and connects traditionally with temples, spiritual faiths and travelling bards.

Odissi

Odissi, , is a major ancient Indian classical dance that originated in the Hindu temples of Odisha – an eastern coastal state of India. Odissi, expresses religious stories and spiritual ideas, particularly of Vaishnavism . Odissi performances have also expressed ideas of other traditions such as those related to Hindu gods Shiva and Surya, as well as Hindu goddesses (Shaktism).
